A learning disability is a neurologically-based processing disorder that can interfere with learning basic skills such as reading, writing, or math. It can also interfere with higher level skills such as organization, time planning, abstract reasoning, long or short-term memory, and attention. Students with learning disabilities typically have average to above average cognitive abilities. A comprehensive evaluation is needed to understand the specific type of learning disability, and the severity of the disability. Although a learning disability cannot be cured, appropriate supports and interventions can help a student overcome their challenges, and become successful in school.
