Neuropsychological Evaluations
A school neuropsychological evaluation is typically needed when there are concerns that something more complicated than learning disabilities is negatively impacting a child’s overall functioning. Possible brain injury, neuro-developmental disabilitites, and complex medical history are considered and evaluated.
Neuropsychological tests evaluate functioning in a number of areas including: intelligence, executive functions (such as planning, abstraction, conceptualization), attention, memory, language, perception, sensorimotor functions, motivation, mood state and emotion, quality of life, and personality styles. The areas addressed in the evaluation are determined by the referral question (what are the questions the parent and school want answered), the child’s symptoms, and observations made during interview and testing. Neuropsychological evaluations are typically more thorough, and usually take more testing sessions to complete.
